We visited the south of Wales for a weekend in February, 2006. Always keen to take advantage of the local customs, traditions, and specialties, our visit was whirlwind of Welsh delights. To see our photos from the Pembrokeshire coast of Wales, click HERE.
Wales is not far from where we live. |

Caerphilly Castle |
|
The castle is surrounded by a lake (moat?) |
We saw this heron on a small island in the lake. |
The local cheese, Caerphilly is made in London nowadays. |
That didn't stop us from sampling some. |
The town that Catherine Zeta Jones calls home |
|
Unaware of bird flu, this local woman feeds a robin |
The lovely Welsh coastline of Mumbles |
This shop is where our lovespoon came from. |
|
We dined beside the bay on panninis and wine |
Rugby is the national sport. Although we didn't see this player, we did see an amateur game being played. When we went back to photograph them, they had gone, off to the showers... |
I spent some time here while Nick was away on business. I bought an autographed copy of Sarah Waters' new book. |

Our hotel, The Big Sleep, has been dubbed "One of the 25 coolest hotels in the world" by Conde Nast magazine. Our room had furry curtains and furry chairs. |
John Malkovich's image was all over the hotel - on this mirror in reception, in the stairwell, and printed on the hotel's guide. |
Turns out that John Malkovich is one of the major shareholders in the hotel. Cool actor. Cool hotel. George's Doppelganger. |
|
The Dragon Centre hosted popular ice skating events. |
A cute early morning window cleaner |
The world's largest love spoon. |

He Looks like David Beckham to me. |
A boxer's statue near our hotel. |
The pub where we did most of our drinking |
We also played many, many games of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire". We're still not millionaires. |
Long running sci-fi series of the cardboard sets and foam monsters variety, Doctor Who became one of my favourites after it got updated by Russell T. Davies and starred the 9th (and sexiest) Doctor, Christopher Eccleston. The new, tenth, Doctor is played by David Tennant, is set to become another favourite. We were delighted to discover that there was a Doctor Who exhibition in Cardiff during our visit. We raced there to see real memorabilia from the show and also scouted out some of the Cardiff locations where the series was filmed.
Christopher Eccleston |
Billie Piper and David Tennant |
From the first episode of the updated series. |
None of the three members of a family taking the quiz was able to identify the musical instruments carried by these sinister Santas. I wanted to enlighten them, but I kept quiet. |
Attacked by the dreaded Daleks! |
|
This is how I feel after eating out all weekend. |
|
Original storyboards from the show |
I think this is an episode with David Tennant that we have yet to see. |
A door should be opening somewhere. |
|
Nearby, we visited the newly refurbished waterfront with its impressive theatre. |
